Maths

Our aim is to teach maths lessons which are stimulating and enable children to feel positive about the learning that is taking place.  Therefore we ensure children have access to learning in many different ways.

In the Early Years Foundation Stage, children are taught numbers, shape, space and measure.  They are encouraged to explore these areas through nursery rhymes, stories, role-play and a range of practical activities, in both the indoor and outdoor learning environments. Quality provision in maths is provided and child initiated play is observed and supported by staff in order to move pupils on immediately.

In Key Stage 1 and 2, the children follow the 2014 National Curriculum programme of study. The objectives are covered in daily lessons. Children are taught a range of mental and written methods of problem solving, and have the opportunity to explore maths through stimulating practical activities. Particularly in KS1, It is important to us that we provide children with concrete learning experiences which they can draw upon in future learning.

Our aim is to ensure that our children have a secure understanding of maths and are able to recall and apply their knowledge quickly and accurately.  The children will develop mathematical reasoning and learn to solve problems by applying their mathematical understanding whilst seeking solutions to problems.

We are very lucky here at Hazelbury as we have a range of computing equipment including iPads which are used to enhance learning in maths.
